"George Hattabaugh "Citizens of this vicinity will learn with
regret of the death of George Hattabaugh, which occurred on
Monday, September 2, at 1:03 a.m. "He was born in Salem,
Washington County, Indiana, December 17, 1838, being almost
eighty years of age. In Andrew County, Mo., on Decemeber 9,
1860, he was married to Miss Rebecca G. Turner, whose birthplace
was Franklin County, Ind. To this union was born ten children,
eight of whom, together with the widow and an only sister, Mrs.
Martha Caroline French, of St. Joseph, Mo., survive him. "The
daughters, beginning with the eldest, are Mrs. John R. Bishop,
(deceased), Mrs. James Rowbotham, Helena, Mo., Mrs. J.E. Walden,
Carrollton, Mo., Mrs. James Mobley, Kansas City, Kas., Mrs. John
Rucker, Miami Station and Mrs. S.W. Williams, who resides on the
old homestead. The sons are: Samuel, living at home, George
Denis (deceased), Albert of Miami Station, and John of St.
Joseph, Mo. There were thirty-three grandchildren, twenty-six of
whom are living, and eight great-grandchildren. "Mr. Hattabaugh
has been in failing health for years, but his fatal illness
began July 5, last, being almost two months ago. During most of
this time he was apparently very near death's door and suffered
untold agony, so that the family became reconciled to his
passing away, at least to a great degree. "In Miami's palmy
days Mr. Hattabaugh, in partnership with G.N. Hill, engaged
largely in the saw mill business, buying timber lands much of
which lying on the north side of the river, the logs were rafted
down the river on this side, but for over forty years he has
been farming some of this bottom and north of the river. His
specialty was corn raising, in which he prided himself to be an
expert. His financial successes were the logical effects of
dogged determination and applied industry. "His hand has ever
been open to the church, charity and the good of the country, he
being one of the largest holders of Liberty bonds in our
section. "His was a peculiar personality which must be know to
be appreciated. Although his mind was partially befogged because
of arterial sclerosis or hardening of the arteries during the
last days there was occasional flashes which proclaimed the fact
that the welfare of the loved ones was even then of the dearest
concern to him, and devotion to his wife was of the most
touching character. "With none but kind thoughts and tender
remembrance let him rest in peace. "An old friend."

Hattabaugh, eldest son of George and Rebecca G. Hattabaugh was
born in May, 1966, at Amazonia, Andrew county, Mo. and died
December 22, 1919, in southern Carroll county. "A number of
years ago, under the ministry of Rev. Hill, he united with the
Christian church at Miami Station. He was a member in good
standing of the Masons, Eastern Star and Odd Fellows, and it has
been conceded by those in a position to know that he was
unusually well informed as to the workings of those fraternal
orders. This is not surprising as it was only in keeping with
his general character. Any little self imposed task invariably
received the best of care at his hands. "He attended school at
Riverside, located in a cozy nook near the bridge on the
beautifully shaded banks of the Wakenda and at Miami, Saline
county, public school. One, or both, of these schools can claim
credit for turning out upon the world a number one speller, as
he was a regular detective in spotting mis-spelled words. He was
one of many who came beneath the scepter of Miss Amelia Hawkins,
and his retentive memory enabled him to resurrect many episodes
during her reign. "In his early manhood he was of great
assistance in wresting from the wilderness the Hattabaugh
homestead, which at present is tilled by modern machinery and
smiles with bountiful harvests with not even a scar of a stump
or other vestige to denote its once wild state. Young men of
those times suffered hardships and endured deprivations unknown
to and dreamed of by the youths of today. For long, long years
he was a great sufferer from bronchial asthma. Every thing known
to medical science was resorted to for relief. Visits to
springs, treatments at the hands of specialists in hospitals and
even surgery, but all to no avail. Immediate friends lived on
the rack of fear and suspence, not knowing what each day would
bring forth, and through it all he was patience personified. On
his best days he tried to make himself useful and his was a
familiar figure driving the old family horse to and from the
railroad or river, accomodating comers and goers by thus
transferring them to desired points. Owing to his afflictions
and being a bachelor the closing years of his life were spent
beneath the parental roof. His devotion to his mother was at
once wonderful, touching and refreshing. He never left the farm
except on necessary errands and not then unless assured there
was company within hail for his mother. Thus he denied unto
himself many things he could have enjoyed. Isolated from the
general activities of life, he entertained himself and mother,
whose imperfect sight denied her the privilege by reading the
newspapers, of which there was always a liberal allowance about
the home, and thus kept thoroughly posted on current events.
Theirs was the simple life and had it not been for the presence
of the demon preying disease, would have been idealistic. In the
battle of life no substitutes can be hired and although the
sorrowing mother has left to her five daughters and two sons,
not one of them can take the place of the departed. "Regardless
of the hazardous condition of the river crossing, his earthly
remains were brought to the Saline side and intered beside those
of his father, who passed on a little more than a year before.
The funeral arrangements were under the charge of Undertaker
Willis of Carrollton, a brother Mason. The pallbearers were
members of Mason lodge No. 39 of DeWitt, Mo. At the grave
Raymond S. Edmonds gave an able and highly appreciated talk,
which was preceded by prayer by Rev. Barrett and followed by
Rev. Jones, representing the Odd Fellows. "After such a long
struggle to live the words 'at rest' are most applicable and
should form some comfort to the bereaved as well as the thought

Respected friend of us all.

Call to Worship and Opening Prayer
Our help is in the name of the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

The eternal God is our Refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms. They will uphold us.

Let us pray. Eternal God, who loves us with an everlasting love, and can turn the shadow of death into the morning; help us now to wait upon you as we express our reverence for life. In the silence of this time speak to us of eternal things, that through patience, the reading scripture and remembering together we may find hope and peace. Amen.

Readings from the Old Testament
We turn to God's word for comfort, hope and sustenance. In Eccleciastes, the seasons of our life together are affirmed.

"For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:

a time to be born, and a time to die;
a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;
a time to kill, and a time to heal;
a time to break down, and a time to build up;
a time to weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
a time to throw away stones, and a time to gather stones together;
a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
a time to seek, and a time to lose;
a time to keep, and a time to throw away;
a time to tear, and a time to sew;
a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
a time to love, and a time to hate;
a time for war, and a time for peace.

For everything there is a time and a time for every matter under heaven."

In the writings of the prophet Isaiah, a new understanding of the nature of God is revealed. (Isaiah 40:28-31)

Have you not known? Have you not heard?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
the Creator of the ends of the earth.
God does not faint or grow weary;
God's understanding is unsearchable.
God gives power to the faint,
and strengthens the powerless.
Even youths will faint and be weary,
and the young will fall exhausted;
But those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles,
they shall run and not be weary,
they shall walk and not faint."

The psalmist describes the comfort of God as a child calmed and quieted in a mother's arms. As we remember this mother together today, may we find comfort in the One whose arms she now rests safely within.

"O Lord, my heart is not lifted up,
my eyes are not raised too high;
I do not occupy myself with things too great
and marvelous for me.
But I have calmed and quieted my soul,
like a child quieted at her mother's breast;
like a child that is quieted is my soul.
O Israel, hope in the Lord from this time forth and forevermore."

Readings from the New Testament
Let us continue to find comfort in the words of Holy Scripture as they are found in the New Testament. Our first reading is from Paul's letter to the Romans as he speaks to the power of God's love for us demonstrated in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

"What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us? God who did not withhold God's own Son, but gave him up for all of us, will God not with him also give us everything else? It is Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us. Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through the One who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord."

I conclude the scripture readings with these words from Jesus as recorded by John.

Jesus said "Do not let your hearts be troubled, Believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house there are many dwelling places. Meditation
In Ecclesiastics we read together that for everything there is a season and a time for every matter under the heavens. Today is a time when we gather to honor the life of Marguerite Freuler, to give thanks for the times and seasons of her life and to comfort each other in this time of loss in our own.

Marguerite, the one we have loved and the one who has loved us over the years is no longer with us. It is a time to mourn. And yet simultaneously, we know joy in the memories we have of her and we celebrate the fullness of the seasons she lived during her 106 years.

The seasons of Marguerite's life spanned the twentieth century and then some. She was born in Paxton, Illinois on August 7, 1900 and spent her earliest years in this small town with her parents and older sister. Following high school Marguerite worked as a secretary for a local business.

Her life changed the day a handsome young salesman walked into her office, with a deep tan dressed to the tens. Marguerite's initial impression of Arthur was that he was arrogant. He was good looking and he knew it, she would say. Her feelings about this handsome man soon changed when he asked her on a date. They were married in her parent's living room, a simple, yet elegant wedding. Shortly after their wedding, they moved to Chicago for a year. Marguerite was settled into their apartment within a few days and found a job as a secretary downtown. The year they spent in Chicago was filled with wonderful memories of taking the L together, going out to dinner and enjoying the windy city.

Then they moved to St. Louis where they made their home and built a life together. Their bond brought the gift of children into their lives. Paul, their son was born in 1927 and Suzie, who was officially Marilyn Marguerite followed two years later in 1929. Marguerite and Arthur lived in St. Louis until 1938 when they built the house in Shrewsbury that would be Marguerite's home until she moved to Minnesota in 2004, at the age of 104 to be closer to her grandchildren.

Marguerite loved her home and loved being a homemaker. She was devoted to Arthur who was the love of her life. She adored her children and, later welcomed and celebrated her grandchildren and great grandchildren delighting in each season of their young lives. Marguerite also had a special place in her heart for dogs, especially large dogs.

After their children were grown, she and Arthur spent most of their vacations traveling to Minnesota and California to be with their children's families. When Arthur died in 1969, Marguerite's heart was broken and yet, there was a strength and resilience within Marguerite, which allowed her to discover a new life of independence and adventure. For everything there is a season.

In her later years Marguerite learned how to play bridge and enjoyed the challenge and discipline of the game. She loved St. Louis and was a wonderful tour guide when her grandchildren visited, from the St. Louis Zoo to the Muny to Shaw's Garden and Six Flags. She kept her mind active through cross word puzzles and reading magazines, especially about people and recipes. She was a wonderful cook and especially famous for her delicious homemade bread.

She also enjoyed the women's association at the Presbyterian Church and traveling around the country on bus trips for the retired. Arthur had invested well and took care of Marguerite following his passing during the 37 years she lived as a widow.

Marguerite was a woman of great strength and dignity. She was also a woman who knew great sorrow and loss, outliving her husband, both her children and all of her friends. Marguerite enjoyed every season of her life and lived it to the fullest. In these most recent years, following the loss of her children, Marguerite was ready to meet her Maker.

My husband and I had the privilege of meeting Marguerite at Carol and Art Webster's home Easter Day, 1995. (Dr. Webster was the Pastor of Webster Groves Presbyterian Church at the time and I was a new Associate Pastor.) She was 94 at the time and our son Paul was seven weeks old. Marguerite was interesting, candid, refreshingly honest and an inspiration as a young 94. I remember my husband Peter saying over the next few years as we shared holidays with Marguerite at the Websters', when the food was passed, "I'll have whatever Marguerite is having."

Marguerite had a special bond with the Websters, especially Carol who was like a daughter to her. When Trish called Carol last Saturday to let her know Marguerite was in a better place, they wept together on the phone, grateful for the privilege of knowing and being loved by this remarkable woman.

Carol shared with Trish a conversation she had with Marguerite. One day she asked her what she thought heaven would be like for her. Without hesitation, Marguerite said she would be sitting on a green grassy hill overlooking a lake. Arthur, her husband, would be on one side of her with his arm around her lovingly. On the other side of her would be a large dog. This was heaven to her.

Today, we remember Marguerite with love and affection, and we give thanks for her resilience and courage, her good taste and independent spirit. Today we give thanks for the strength of her opinions and her bright, articulate mind. And we give thanks for her fun loving spirit and good sense of humor.

Marguerite, our matriarch has come a long way indeed and we are grateful that she has come full circle in the seasons of her life and is now resting safely and peacefully in the arms of her creator God.

"For each of us there is a time to be born and a time to die." So be it. Amen.

Prayer
Let us pray: O God, from whom we come, to whom we return, and in whom we live and move and have our being. We praise you for the good gift of life; for it's wonder and mystery, it's friendships and fellowships. We thank you for the ties that bind us one to another. We bless you for your loving and patient dealings with us, whereby you do ever teach us your way; for the meaning that lies hidden in the heart of sorrow, disappointment, and grief; and for your guiding hand along the way of our lives.

We give thanks to you for your daughter, Marguerite, recalling all in her that made others love her. We bless you for the good and gracious influences in her home, We thank you for the goodness and truth that have passed from her life into the lives of others, and have made the world richer for her presence.

We bless your name for the revelation of yourself and of your love in our Lord Jesus Christ, and for the hope set before us in the Gospel. We thank you that deep in the human heart is an unquenchable trust that life does not end with death; that the One who made us, will care for us beyond the bounds of vision, even as God has cared for us in this earthly world. We praise your name that our hope has been so wondrously confirmed in the life and words and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Grant us the comfort of your presence, and the ministry of the Holy Spirit. Renew within us the gifts of faith, patience and enduring love. May we go forth from this place, remembering with joy the life of Marguerite. Hear now the prayer you taught us to pray together, saying: Lord's Prayer

As we go forth from this place, giving thanks for the seasons of Marguerite's life and the privilege of sharing those seasons with her, may the Lord bless you and keep you. May the Lord's face shine upon you and be gracious unto you. May the countenance of the Lord be lifted upon you, and give you peace. Amen.

Committal
To everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

so writes the preacher in Ecclesiastes. At this time we complete the journey with Marguerite and bring her, lovingly to her final resting place where she is reunited with her beloved Arthur. Even as the cycle of this remarkable life is complete, we bring her home confident that life does not end with death, that the One who created Marguerite will care for her beyond the bounds of our vision of understanding.

For we believe that if the earthly tent in which we live is no longer, we have a home with God, a house not made with hands eternal in the heavens.

In faith and in the hope of the resurrection to eternal life, through our Lord Jesus Christ,
We commend to almighty God our sister Marguerite Frueler,
and we commit her body returned to the ground,
Earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust.

Marguerite does not come home alone. Today we have also brought the ashes of her daughter Susie, which have been placed in her cascett. Susie died in 2005, a devoted daughter, wife and dear aunt. We honor her life and bring her home safely with the one who brought her into this world, her dear mother.

In faith and in the hope of the resurrection to eternal life, through our Lord Jesus Christ,
We commend to almighty God our sister "Susie" Glasgow, and we commit her ashes,
Earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust.

Blessed are those who die in the Lord, says the Sprit. They rest from their labors, and their works follow them.

Let us pray. O Lord, support us all the day long until the shadows lengthen, and the evening comes and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over, and our work is done. Then, in your mercy, grant us a safe lodging, and a holy rest and peace at the last; even as you have granted Marguerite and Susie, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Go out into the world in peace, have courage, hold on to what is right. Return no one evil for evil, strengthen the faint-hearted, support the weak, help the suffering, honor everyone.

And may the love of God, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the strength and presence of the Holy Spirit bless you and keep you as you live into the future, giving thanks for the gift of the past, for the gift of Marguerite.
